Here’s another peek into the creative mind of our pal, Shirley Wong, also known as Little Miss Bento! This time, she’s sharing her behind-the-scenes experience as the food stylist & menu consultant at the Gudetama Café in Singapore.
I remember when I first started making Gudetama inspired food art and bento just a few years back; this loveable lazy egg was still quite a new character to most people.
Often seen curling up in a bacon blanket with no desire to do anything, Sanrio’s loveable lazy egg, Gudetama, has since gained such a following worldwide.
Personally and perhaps for many people, Gudetama is a character that many of us can relate to. Don’t we all at some point, question our existence or suffer the lack of motivation to do anything?
And so fast-forward to today… the fever of Gudetama has officially arrived in Singapore with the opening of first Gudetama themed cafe in Southeast Asia, at Suntec City mall.
Knowing that I was a huge fan of Gudetama, the founders of Joe & Dough and The Soup Spoon contacted me late last year to work together on the menu curation and styling for this new Gudetama Cafe.
Taking inspiration from Gudetama’s unique appearance with a mint leaf specially designed for Gudetama Cafe Singapore, I co-created a full menu of wholesome comfort food, desserts, and handcrafted beverages.
Be wowed by the fun plating and presentation of the dishes that are not only photo-ready... they're a feast for the palate too.
Some of my favourites would include the desserts with the surprise elements. Take for instance this ‘Shoyu Ramen’ - it is actually a cake disguised as ramen noodles!
And the TA-MA-GO is sushi-designed cake based dessert that you can order at the Gudetama Cafe Singapore.
It is a total Gudetama experience, with a lazy egg themed interior even before you enter the cafe. This 112-seat cafe consists of a main dining area and an indoor garden with a green wall and Gudetama life-sized figurines, animated walls, sunny side up eggs and waffle ceilings, and egg shaped booths.
